RE: Will it pull it??

Well the decision has been made. The 5er hitch is being put on today and picking up the 5er tomorrow. From what I gathered if I would have put on my first post that I have 2500 Chevy and not a 1500HD which has the exact same suspension I probably would have gotten nothing put "HITCH IT UP AND GO" reponses. The 5er's dry weight is 6,749 and GVWR is 8,418 a difference of 1,669 pounds. I dont know about everybody else that goes camping but I don't even have 1,669 pounds of camping supplies to even put in the camper. Towels, washcloths, shave cream, razor, plastic forks, paper plates, blankets, sheets, tomato sandwiches, drinks, flashlight, a few other odds and ends. If all that adds up to 1,669 pounds, the next camping trip for someone is on me. Pics are coming soon. Good for you and yes your right about the weight of all your camping supplies. Even 1000 lbs would be pushing it with your camping gear. Have fun and can't wait to see some pictures.

RE: Will it pull it??

So even if you have a 1 ton dully with a 40ft 5er behind and the brakes go out on the trailer your still safer just because you have a 1 ton? But if you have a half ton with a light weight 30ft or less trailer and the brakes go out on the trailer your all of sudden less safe or more of a hazard just because you have a 1/2 ton? That's BS Whenever I see a dully 1 ton with a huge 5er behind it to me that look to be more unsafe than any 1/2 ton that I've seen with a 5er behind. I have actually tested to see how my truck would stop without using the brakes on the trailer and although it wasn't in an emergency situation it actually stopped the trailer and truck just fine.

RE: King pin stabilizers

I was going to start this earlier but thought I"d wait. I"ve already posted to many questions about my new 5er purchase. Listening to some on here about this tripod, most say yes but some say no. Does trailer size/weight have a big bearing on movement? I'm looking at a Cedar Creek Silverback 36L5S which is a 38'9" five slide 5er. Its very heavy. I"ll be full timing in it for about thirty months and wanted it as comfortable as possible. Because this trailer is so large and heavy, would a tripod still be needed? Before you decide to get a tripod set the camper up and see how much it moves around when your in it. Although our 5er is a lot smaller than the one your looking at we do notice a difference especially in the bedroom area. With the stablizer we haven't noticed any movement but, without we can feel same movement especially when in the bed moving around ( if you know what I mean :))

RE: Will it pull it??

Of course you will be able to pull it with no problems. We have a Rockwood that weighs around 6100lb dry and loaded up probably close to 7000lbs minus water and we have no problems pull it or stopping with our 1/2 ton which only has a 5.3L engine. We always fill the water tank after we get to where ever we camp. So with your truck being a heavy duty with air bags and a 6.0L engine I say go for it and enjoy. Don't let the 1/2 ton bashers scare you.

RE: King pin stabilizers

For sure it helps. If you decide to get one look on ebay and save yourself some money I got one for like 75 bucks.

RE: Legal rig length

Here in Minnesota your total rig can't be more that 70ft and when we got our 5er they told us that your camper can't be more than 28ft if you want to tow a boat or trailer behind it.

RE: Got new Rockwood 8280SS home, 1st impressions

We get right around the 10 mpg range pulling ours which isn't much different from our TT which we got like 11-12 mpg. Although its not great it's better than getting 7-8 mpg like I thought I was gonna get. Still we really like our 5er

RE: size of 5er and RV parks

I would think it would be something to consider. Our 5er is only 26 ft and I know some of the sites that we've had there would of been no way to get a bigger unit in there. Although with a longer unit you have a lot more living space. So there are pros and cons to a longer unit. Good luck

RE: Got new Rockwood 8280SS home, 1st impressions

We really like our rockwood and we looked at the same model that you have but, because of the length we went with the 8244 instead. In Minnesota your 5er can't be more than 28 ft long if you want to tow a boat or trailer behind it. Just curious what do you get for gas mileage towing your unit?

RE: Think We're Going Back

I know around here MH similar to yours are going for 40k. Pretty sad considering they go for 100-200k new. Not a good time to be selling. Good luck

RE: Why a 5'er??

Easy of hooking and unhooking, lots storage, roomy, easier to back into tight spots, able to tow a boat or trailer behind, more stable to pull down the road. We are very happy that we upgraded to a 5er.

RE: Electric Awning Feedback

We have a power awning on our Rockwood and it is nice and quick for opening and closing but, I prefer the manuel awning. With the power awning you can't tilt one side down to let the rain water run off and for putting lights on you have to have a step stool to reach the awning roll.

RE: Tow Veh Purchase?

Everyone has his own finances, but if trying to save money: Your proposed truck is to be essentially insurance in case you might have to move the trailer. Meanwhile the truck costs a huge bunch and needs insurance itself. Plus it will just kill you for fuel as a daily driver. How much does it cost to hire somebody else to move the rig if you change locations compared with the cost of owning the truck? Why not just get real insurance for the trailer (since you are not paying house insurance instead) and get a little car that is good on gas? The money saved on the truck could go towards wine, women, and song instead of being wasted! I was thinking the exact same thing. Even though you might find a diesel truck that will get 20 mpg if your lucky your still going to be paying more for diesel fuel. On the other hand if you could find someone to move the trailer for you and get a car that would get somewhere in the 30's mpg range think of how much money you would be saving yourself. Just a thought anyways

RE: cost of hitch

Being that you have a long boxes you won't need a slider hitch that's for sure. We have a Reese Signature 16k slider hitch that has the mounting brackets under the bed of the pickup and we paid 1200 for ours installed which I thought was alittle bit high. I guess it all depends on if you want the mounting rails in the bed or under the bed of the truck that will determine the cost. I would also suggest looking for a hitch where it not only pivets front to back but, from side to side as well.

RE: A question re: Septic tanks ?

You have to close the valve even if you have it hooked up to the septic tank. I learned that lesson a number of years ago. If you keep it open not only will you get a bad smell but, you will also get little flying bugs coming out of the toilet not to mention getting plugged up.

RE: 5th Wheel Ultra Light Quality Ratings?

We have a Rockwood Ultra lite which is also made by Forest River and so far we are very happy with it. We had a coachmen before and I have to say that the interior quality is much better on the Rockwood.

RE: Rockin' for LOVE

I know before we got a tripod stabilizer under the king pin my wife and I would notice how the front would move whenever we were ummmmmm lets just say when we were making the bed. Now with the tripod it seems pretty solid. Although I'm not sure what it looks like from the outside when someone walks by. :h

RE: Dry camping questions

The hot water heater usually will hold about 6 gallons of water which has it's own plug in order to drain it. The only way you can burn out the heater is if you turn it on.
